By Kevin S. Fox & Sonia Ibáñez

With the best-selling books Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (2012) and A Walk in the Woods (1998) having their star-studded film adaptations released during the last two years, long distance walks have gained even more popular attention than ever before.  Hollywood is not partial to America, either.  Emilio Estevez' The Way (2011) has introduced many armchair travelers and would-be pilgrims from around the globe to northern Spain's Camino de Santiago.

But beyond these popular—and, perhaps, comfortable—representations of the long walk, what does it actually mean to travel on foot for months at a time?  What about the logistics—food, water, shelter, safety?  How long do you walk each day?  How do you ready yourself for a hike that will take you through two or three seasons and across thousands of kilometers of terrain?  What physical and mental challenges can you expect to encounter along the way?

Sonia Ibáñez, a photographer from Madrid, and Kevin S. Fox, a cultural geographer from Connecticut, walked the classic American footpath, the Appalachian Trail (AT), 3,500 kilometers end-to-end in 2013.  Starting in June atop Mount Katahdin in Maine and arriving 5 months later on Springer Mountain in northern Georgia, the pair documented what they call their Great American Pilgrimage, all the while capturing in word and image American cultural landscapes found outside of the well-trodden tourist paths.  Journey step-by-step with these two thru-hikers and get to know the how-to basics of hiking the AT, witness this other side of the United States through their photographs and get a taste of an America experienced 5 kilometers per hour.
